Experimental Design (Third/Fourth Year Undergraduate Level)

Rationale

The third/fourth year undergraduate level Experimental Design Inventory builds on the lower level (first year undergraduate version) to explore more complex concepts that must be grasped to design, understand, and interpret more detailed experiments in the sciences and beyond.

Development Timeframe

This concept inventory has been through one preliminary round of undergraduate student validation, and has been the focus of a primary feedback focus group with experts (instructors and graduate students). Following further student validation, this inventory was piloted as a pre- and post-test in the fall of 2012, and in the winter (January) term of 2013. Following data analysis, this inventory was provisionally validated by experts and is now ready for use.

* Please note that while we feel this inventory is robust and reliable, it has not been validated as rigorously as most of our others have. *

Number Of Questions

This inventory features 27 multiple choice questions, focusing on concepts ranging from the need for effective replication and control groups (also featured in the first year undergraduate version) to the philosophy of hypothesis testing and what constitutes success and failure in a research-oriented environment. The questions are split into three separate scenarios (ecology, protein analysis, physiology/cell biology).

Contributors

Thomas Deane, Kathy NommeKathryn Zeiler and Liane Chen collaborated in the development of this inventory.
